When Do You Need a Safety Certificate?
Selling Your Vehicle
Required before you can transfer registration to a buyer in Queensland.
Re-registering
If your registration has lapsed for more than 3 months.
Interstate Transfer
Moving a vehicle from another state to Queensland registration.
Written-Off Repair
After a written-off vehicle has been repaired and requires re-registration.
What's Inspected
A Queensland Safety Certificate inspection covers all safety-critical components of your vehicle. Our licensed inspectors check:
Common Fail Points
Knowing what commonly fails can help you prepare. Check these before your inspection:
- Tyre tread depth
Must be at least 1.5mm across the tread. Check for uneven wear.
- Windscreen chips/cracks
Cracks in driver's line of sight or chips larger than 15mm will fail.
- Light bulbs not working
All lights must work — headlights, brake lights, indicators, reverse lights.
- Brake pad thickness
Minimum 2mm friction material required. Worn pads = fail.
- Oil leaks
Any significant fluid leaks visible from underneath will cause failure.
- Worn wiper blades
Must effectively clear the windscreen without streaking.
